
Getting Your UV Curing Right with Gallium Iodide
Standard mercury lamps are fine for most jobs, but they have their limits. If you’re dealing with thick inks or deep coatings, you’ll notice the surface looks cured, but the bottom is still gooey. That’s where our custom gallium iodide lamps come in. We build these specifically to hit the spectral peaks that standard lamps just miss. It’s all about penetration. The light goes deeper into the material, so the bottom layer dries at the same speed as the top. No more tacky residue. No more peeling. The balance of power and heat Here’s the thing: gallium iodide gives you a much stronger punch in the 300nm to 400nm range. But you can’t just crank up the wattage and call it a day. If you push too much power without the right cooling, you’re going to warp your substrate or literally burn the ink right off the page. It’s a delicate balance. We look at your line speed and how thick your ink is, then we tweak the tube length and power draw. You get the curing power you need without turning your conveyor into an oven. Built to take the heat We use high-purity fused quartz for the glass. Why? Because regular glass absorbs UV energy, which kills the tube fast. We also beef up the electrodes so they don’t give up after a few heat cycles. Just a heads-up: these lamps run hotter than what you’re probably used to. That’s the price you pay for that deeper cure. Because of that, you’ve got to keep your reflectors spotless. A little bit of dust might seem harmless, but it absorbs heat and will chew through your lamp’s lifespan. Getting them onto your line The good news is these are basically drop-in replacements. We’ll handle the end-cap dimensions and the wiring so they play nice with your current ballasts. One tip when you’re hooking them up: keep an eye on your voltage. If your power jumps around, your spectral output shifts. That leads to those annoying “under-cured” patches that ruin a whole run.
