
Why We Switched to Gallium Iodide for PCB Lamps
After walking through about 3,000 printing and PCB shops, we kept seeing the same headache. Standard UV lamps just aren’t cutting it for high-density photoresist curing. They’re too broad. So, we stopped trying to make old tech work and shifted our focus to Gallium Iodide (GaI). We wanted to hit those exact wavelengths that modern circuitry actually needs.
The science, minus the textbook
Here’s the thing about standard mercury lamps: they throw light everywhere. It’s a mess. GaI lamps are different. They put almost all their energy right where it matters—between 300nm and 400nm. That’s the sweet spot for most photoresists. The best part? Because we aren’t wasting energy on a broad spectrum, you don’t get that nasty IR heat soaking into your boards.**No more warping.**Just faster curing and cleaner results.
Built for the grind
Factory floors are brutal. We know that. That’s why we use a quartz envelope that can handle sudden temperature swings without cracking. We also beefed up the end-caps. If your machines vibrate—and let’s be honest, they all do—the lamp stays put. We also spent a lot of time on the power density. If you just cram too many watts into a short tube, the lamp burns out in a few weeks. That’s a nightmare for your maintenance crew. We calibrated the wattage so you get steady, reliable light across the entire conveyor belt without killing the bulb.
Real talk: What happens on the floor
These are drop-in replacements. You can wire them straight into your existing ballasts and get moving. But a quick heads-up:Check your cooling fans. Since GaI lamps concentrate so much energy, they get hot. If your exhaust is clogged or just too weak, that heat builds up and starts messing with your photoresist quality. Give them room to breathe. You’ll probably find yourself replacing these a bit more often than those low-intensity lamps. It’s a trade-off. You get a massive jump in line speed, which usually makes the extra maintenance a no-brainer. It’s all about how many boards you need to push out per hour.
